in the darkest part

of late last night

i felt afraid

the what if’s consumed

my exhausted brain

if god exists

why did he take her now

her presence

an anchor

in troubled seas

she was always

a shadow in lofty halls

she made the light pronounced

and strangely tall

and now her tiny soul

has gone away

her big voice

however

will forever stay

today

we weep

we honor

we take her hand

and walk her to the place

where she began

and then her power returns to us

in lieu of flowers

we vote a sweep

today we raise our eyes

to the empty sky

we say a prayer

our hearts so true

tomorrow

my sweet honorable justice ruth

for you

and all of us

(democracy too)

we turn america

the most beautiful

richest

shade of blue
