november

the morning was so cold

everything was frozen

the dahlia leaves

the sweet potatoe vine

all the annuals i nurtured

my heart broke just a little bit

the sadness of losing what i love

the bees are gone

the butterflies

the goldfinch

i knew winter would come

the bareness of trees

the gray days

everything that awaits spring

the daffodils will reappear

the crocus

but winter is here

i reach inside to find the light

the short days

the long nights

of clear

star laden skies

it happens every year

all the goodbyes

and i linger here

in wait of the stark of winter

the world feels a chilled kind of holy

a candle flickering

a frosty window pane

ice crystals shimmer like glitter

but life is not the same

i gaze outside myself

the loneliness of midwinter is edging near
